Symrise, a global leader in the production of flavours and fragrances, needed to create its new R&D centre in Beijing. Following fruitful previous collaborations, they appointed us to bring this vision to life. The space has now officially opened its doors, with a mission to propel the organisation’s growth in Northern China.

The R&D centre is uniquely designed to serve as a workspace and a laboratory, balancing flexibility, efficiency and local cultural elements. This dual-purpose facility is a key component in Symrise’s plan for strategic expansion in over the next five years.

High quality design to support innovation

Committed to delivering the highest-standard solutions, our team of MEP engineers built the centre integrating top-quality air systems, electrical setups and effective water drainage solutions. A sophisticated ultrapure water system is in place for RO water supply. To minimise scent cross-contamination, each laboratory has dedicated storage and odour inspection rooms. The air in these rooms is changed 6 to 12 times per hour to ensure a stable environment of negative pressure.

A thoughtful and functional layout

We used glass partitions to separate the office and laboratory areas, enhancing safety and spatial transparency. The workspace is designed to alternate between open and semi-enclosed focus areas for optimal use of the available space.

Cultural integration for sense of ownership

The design features aspects that reflect Beijing, such as city walls, window grilles and roof tiles. By integrating traditional and contemporary design, the space connects with local culture while encouraging a sense of belonging.

Delivering high quality lab design, the opening of Symrise’s new R&D centre is a significant step in supporting and advancing the company’s innovation and research. By elevating the work environment, the project contributes to the company’s continued growth and success.
